The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), according to the flag bearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), is a mastery in deceiving Ghanaians for their votes.
John Dramani Mahama’s comments come on the back of what he asserts is the swindle of teacher trainees by the government on its promise to restore their allowances.
According to Mahama, his administration discontinued the payment of the allowances to grant them as loans to the students whilst paying for their feeding grants.
However, due to political capital, the NPP government promised to restore the stipend and ended up dividing what used to be paid them into two, and further divided the remaining half of the allowance to pay the feeding grant and the other as the allowance.
Speaking at Peki as part of his campaign tour to the Volta Region Thursday, August 15, 2024, John Mahama indicated that the NPP implemented nothing close to what they promised the students, terming it as deceit for votes.
“When NDC was in government, we used to pay teacher trainee allowances and also we used to pay feeding grants. We said we were going to change the trainee allowances into students’ loan but we were going to maintain the feeding grant. They said no, they could pay the teachers’ trainee allowances.
“You know what they did, what they used to pay allowance, they slashed it by half and the half that they are paying, they slashed it into another half, using half as the feeding grant and using half to pay to the students as allowances. This is not what they promised. But that is how they are. They will deceive you just to win your votes,” he disclosed.
Meanwhile, teacher trainees are currently being paid GHC149.00 as monthly allowance.
The reintroduction of the allowance was done in connection with the nursing trainee allowance of which most of the months are in arrears.
