The removal of the name of Alhaji Nuhu Zaruk, a contender in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primary in the Bimbilla constituency led to the vandalisation of properties belonging to the party in the constituency.

On the evening of Tuesday, January 02, 2024, some irate youth supporters of Zaruk stormed the party’s office to demand reasons for the expunction of their candidate’s name from the vetting list.

They have threatened to set up the party’s office in flames if Alhaji Zaruk’s name is not restored on the list.

Prior to the intervention of the military to disperse the youth and restore order, the enraged youth burnt tyres and pelted stones at the office.

Speaking on Ghana Tonight with Alfred Ocansey Tuesday, TV3’s Northern regional correspondent, Christopher Amoako, indicated that the youth suspected the party leadership wants the incumbent MP, Dominic Bingab Aduna Nitiwul, who is also the Minister of Defence, go unopposed.

However, the youth say they want both aspirants to contest and whoever emerges winner would have their support. They expressed discontent with the removal of Mr. Zaruk’s name from the list even when the vetting has not been conducted.

The regional vetting of the parliamentary hopefuls is scheduled to start today, Wednesday, January 3 to Friday, January 5, 2024.
