Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, the Director of Legal Affairs for the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), says the opposition New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) suit at the Supreme Court over presidential term limits is absurd.
He says the action has no legal basis and is a waste of the apex court’s time.
Speaking on the BigIssue segment on the NewDay morning show on TV3 Monday, November 2, 2026, Tameklo said the court’s jurisdiction has not been properly invoked.
He questioned what act or omission the party is challenging under Article 2 of the 1992 Constitution. “Where is the life issue? What is the Supreme Court invited to decide?” he asked.
According to him, “time and again, the Supreme Court has made it clear that their jurisdiction is invoked only under Article 2, if there is an Act, omission by a person.”
He explained that “a person has been construed to be corporate or a natural person. In this case, what act of a natural person, what act of a corporate person is being the subject of this disputation? None!”
His comments follow the NPP’s suit at the Supreme Court to seek interpretation of Ghana’s presidential term limits.
The suit is seeking declarations on Articles 58(2) and 66(1), (2) and (3)(a) of the 1992 Constitution. The party wants the court to declare that a person can be elected President only twice, regardless of whether the terms are consecutive or non-consecutive.
The party also wants the court to affirm that a person cannot hold the office for more than two four-year terms, amounting to eight years in total. The writ was filed by the party’s solicitor, Godfred Yeboah Dame, with the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice named as defendant.
According to the party, interpreting the limit to mean two consecutive terms only could allow a former President who served one term, lost re-election and later returned to serve two more terms.
However, Tameklo, who is also the CEO of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), says the opposition is only wasting the Supreme Court’s time.
He said the suit is borne out of confusion within the NPP over its future direction, adding that the party has turned a political problem into a legal one to invite everyone into a conversation that is manifestly absurd.
“Only to go and waste the time of the apex court because a group of people feel confused over the way forward for this country,” he added.
He also commented on the party’s leadership, asserting that the NPP’s flagbearer is struggling for visibility.
According to him, Kojo Bamba, their 1st Vice Chairman, is currently more visible and performing better in public than Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
“I think that the NPP flagbearer currently, is Kojo Bamba. He is more visible, he is doing better out there, for me than the flagbearer,” he said.
“And it is that challenge that the NPP currently is having. That is why they have turned matters to invite all of us into a table to have a conversation over a matter that is manifestly absurd,” he added.
