The Acting Ashanti Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Kofi Baah Acheamfour, has threatened to lead a demonstration against government if the soldier who killed one Akwasi Lala, alias Kusivi, for wearing a military uniform is not brought to book.
Mr. Acheamfour made the declaration after visiting Kusivi’s family in Nyinahin, where he expressed his outrage over the incident.
He said, the soldiers deliberately initiated the shootings, which resulted in Kusivi’s death. He described the action as unprofessional and unacceptable, questioning why the military couldn’t have arrested Kusivi and handed him over to the police if they believed he had erred.
He stressed that Kusivi was not a criminal and did not warrant such treatment from the military.
The Acting Ashanti Regional Secretary of the ruling NDC, issued a two-week ultimatum to the government, the Minister of Defense, Omane Boamah and his deputy, Hon. Brogya Gyamfi to investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators to book.
“I, Baah Acheamfuor, if within two weeks I do not hear from the government, I will lead a demonstration in this town against government,” he said.
He is of the view that the President, as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, has a responsibility to ensure that the military operates within the bounds of the law and respects the rights of citizens.
He disclosed that he had known Kusivi personally and was aware of his contribution to the victory of the NDC in the 2024 elections.
He described Kusivi as a dedicated party member who did not deserve to be treated in such a manner.
As the ultimatum expires, it remains to be seen whether the government will respond to the NDC’s demands.
