Former Black Starlets player Nii Odartey Lamptey is confident if the preparations by the current team before the WAFU Zone B U-17 Championships is anything to go by, then Ghanaians should expect more from the players.

He, therefore, expressed confidence that the team can win the tournament, which is taking place at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.

Speaking on Agoro Fie on Onua TV on Thursday, May 16, the former U-17 star said he has followed the regimen of the team under Laryea Kingston and he believes they will bring glory to the nation.

“It is the same preparations we got as U-17 players,” the Assistant Black Satellites coach said in Twi.

“If we continue like this, I won’t be surprised we will get the results we are looking for,” he told host Alfred Takyi Mensah.

The Black Starlets began the qualifiers on a flying note, thrashing neighbours Ivory Coast 5-1 in the inaugural match.

A brace from Joseph Narbi in the first half was what propelled Laryea Kingston’s side to the vital win.

Nii Odartey Lamptey, who was named the Best Player at the 1991 FIFA U-17 World Cup, says he was not surprised with the scoreline in the opener and he knows what the team can do.

“I’m not surprised because I know what they can do. I have watched them in Prampram [where they camped] and I go there to see what [coach] Laryea and [his assistant] Jacob Nettey are doing with the team, so I am not surprised.

“I won’t be surprised if they win the tournament because I know what they are capable of doing.”

Ghana will next play Benin in Group A to stand a chance of making it to the semi-finals of the championships.
