An explosion in some shops at Odumase, near Konongo in the Asante Akyem Central municipality of the Ashanti region has killed one person and injured several others.

The mining chemicals which got exploded at the shops where they were sold is reported to have also injured firefighters together with other persons after killing one.

The flames, according to reports, commenced at one of the shops where dynamite is sold, triggering a powerful blast that affected other buildings, leaving many injured.

Authorities have confirmed that one person has died through the explosion, the cause of it, however, is unknown.

Firefighters deployed to contain the blaze also suffered injuries, while some victims reportedly had parts of their bodies dismembered.

Further safety concerns have also come up after the incident since the explosion occurred near a fuel station in the area.

The Asante Akyem Central Municipal Fire Commander, Divisional Officer Grade 2 Joe Bryden, confirmed that a resident who tried to warn firefighters about the danger tragically lost his life.

“He was trying to warn the firefighters to back off, but before he could escape, the explosion occurred. He was severely injured, and I’ve been told he has passed,” he stated.

The full extent of casualties and damage is still being assessed as investigations into the incident continues.
