The Office of the Special Prosecutor is seeking legal confirmation for the freezing and seizure of financial assets of former Sanitation and Water Resources minister, Cecilia Abena Dapaah.

A motion filed at the High Court Monday, September 11, 2023, wants to confirm freezing orders to back the Cedi and dollar accounts of Madam Dapaah which were frozen on August 9 and overturned by the High Court on August 31.

A hearing has been slated for October 18, 2023.

The High Court ordered that the frozen accounts and seized cash of the former minister be reversed by the OSP in 7 days which it complied.

However, it invoked its powers and refroze the assets right after they were released to her.

Background

Cecilia Dapaah reported her two house helps for stealing $1 million, 300,000 euros, several millions of cedis and personal effects in her house belonging to her and her husband valued at thousands of Ghana Cedis and dollars.

She resigned from her position as minister of Sanitation and Water Resources when there was a public outcry over the sums of monies stashed in her house.

She became a subject of investigation by the OSP, got arrested and granted bail, and a search was conducted in her house on Monday, July 24, 2023.

The OSP said it found US$590,000 and GHC2.7 million in cash at the apartment of the former minister.

The sums identified at her residence were subsequently seized to aid the OSP’s investigation including seven bank accounts which the High Court ordered for them to be reversed.
