The University of Cape Coast has conferred on the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, an honorary doctorate for his efforts in promoting harmony, unity and national development.
The special congregation held at the University of cape coast coincided with the historic first public visit to Cape Coast by the Asantehene and also for the 60th anniversary celebration of the annual Fetu Afahye celebrated by the people of Cape Coast.
The visit to Cape Coast was the first public one for Otumfuo Osei Tutu II since assenting the throne as Asantehene.
He first paid a courtesy call on the Omanhene of Oguaa, Osaberima Kwesi Atta II at the Emintsimadze Palace where he received a rousing welcome.
They exchanged pleasantries and was handed a key symbolising welcome and to feel at home to foster unity between the people of cape coast and Asanteman.

Later at a special congregation held at the University of Cape Coast, he was conferred with an honorary
Doctor of laws (LLF, honoris causa).
He would be known as Otumfuo Osei tutu II, promoter of peace and stability, visionary and generational thinker entrepreneur, advocator of preservation of culture and heritage, distinguished traditional leader, role model of traditional jurisprudence and advocate of rule of law.
Highlighting the conferment, chancellor of the University Dr Sir Sam Esson Jonah, described Otumfuo Osei Tutu II as beacon of hope for the country who has played diverse roles in many spheres to bring development and peace in Ghana and beyond.
Receiving the honorary doctorate, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II expressed gratitude to the University of Cape Coast and Cape Coast in general for being the gateway to Ghana’s education while reaffirming his dedication to the causes of education, development, and unity in Ghana.
Asantehene called for holistic approach to address the country’s educational challenges. The Asantehene’s recognition by UCC adds to his long list of accolades, reinforcing his stature not only as a traditional ruler but also as a statesman committed to the welfare of all Ghanaians.
Professor Kwame Osei Kwarteng of the University of Cape Coast, described the visit and the award of honorary degree as historic journey that will forster the peace and unity of the Fantes and Ashantis.

The Asantehene is expected to spend more days in Cape Coast and attend the grand durbar of the 2024 Oguaa Fetu Afahye on Saturday.
