Waste management experts, Zoomlion Ghana Limited has clarified the recent developments between them and the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), stating that the contract that existed between them expired but not terminated.

According to the company, their contract with the YEA ended in September 2024 after a scheduled extension.

Responding to a June 11, 2025 release from the Office of the President, Zoomlion explained that the agreement—part of the national Street Sweeping Programme—had originally been set to conclude in March 2024, but was extended for an additional six months.

“The contract has therefore reached its natural conclusion and expired,” the company clarified.

“Contrary to claims in some media reports, this expiration does not constitute a termination or cancellation of the agreement by the government, and that is not what the Office of the President stated.”

The letter from the presidency which responded to a petition by investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni, it indicated that the government decided not to renew the contract which had expired almost a year ago, but opted to adopt a competitive tendering for future agreements.

Also, the presidency expressed plans to audit all payrolls made to Zoomlion after expiration of the contract, and pledged to increase the conditions of service for sanitation workers, keenly amongst them being the increment of monthly allowances.

The developments, is what Zoomlion says it welcomes and support, expressing its readiness to engage in the competitive bidding process, as it used to secure the contract in 2019.

“Zoomlion Ghana Limited fully supports and welcomes this approach. We are well prepared and eager to actively participate in any forthcoming competitive procurement processes,” it further stated.

It additionally expressed its readiness to commit to the issue of accountability and lauded the audit initiative taken by the presidency over payments made to the company since the expiration of the contract.

“As a responsible corporate entity, transparency, integrity, and delivering value for money are core to our operations,” the company added, expressing its support for sanitation workers and endorsement of efforts to improve their remuneration.

“Zoomlion remains deeply committed to ensuring dignified and sustainable livelihoods for sanitation workers across the country.”
