Two young men in their thirties have been reported dead after a long trailer carrying an excavator trapped them at Sefwi Besibema in the Akontombra District of the Western North Region.

On Monday, September 13, 2022, a trailer with registration number GE 4871-X was transporting an excavator from Sefwi Akontombra towards Wiawso when its brakes failed.

An eyewitness reports the trailer run into five shops on the roadside, trapping seven people. After rescuing them, two of them had died.

The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Sefwi Wiawso Government Hospital waiting for identification and  autopsy, while the injured persons are receiving treatment.

The eyewitness, Kalam Musa, narrated to Freelancer, Emmanuel Sowah that: “About five shops have been ransacked but thanks be to God, nobody died here. Also, the road has developed damages, our transformer which supplies us electricity has been affected.

“The pole it is  situated is broken. Our information centre has been destroyed. Electrical cables have also been disconnected and the most painful amongst all is that, two out of our four pipe borne waters have been affected because of the electrical cables since we power the pipes with water.”

The Assembly Member for Besibema Electoral Area, Isaac Entsie recounted the losses the accident has caused the community.

“The car failed brakes so there were some children inside the store and one of them who had come out to urinate started shouting so they were all running and his brother who sells phones here said it came to collapse the store and the community pipe.

“The loader also hit the pole and community high tension. I have an information [centre] and it has destroyed all my machines. There was an excavator in it. They were coming from Akontonbra. Five persons were trapped inside and we rescued them but two died on the spot and I can’t tell for now the condition of the others,” he narrated.
