Veteran coach Bashir Hayford has observed that most players who later become coaches do not have the patience needed in the profession.

He said these player-turned-coaches usually expect their players to perform at the same level they did.

But the Heart of Lions coach said coaching does not work that way.

Coach Hayford made this observation in an interview on Onua Sports Center on Onua FM on Tuesday, May 28.

He was responding to the recent resignation by Black Starlets coach Laryea Kingston after tasting his first competitive defeat in charge of the national U-17 team.

The former Black Stars midfielder announced his resignation as coach following the team’s 2-1 defeat to Burkina Faso in the semi-finals of the WAFU Zone B U-17 Championships.

But the Ghana Football Association (GFA) later revealed that Coach Kingston used “inappropriate language” in his interaction with the team after the defeat.

Coach Kingston on Tuesday, May 28 apologised for his behaviour in the aftermath of the game, though insisting his announcement in the post-match presser was without ambiguity.

In his remarks on the matter, Coach Hayford advised Kingston to be patient as coaching is just like teaching.

“When you look at the statement the GFA brought out, it appears [Laryea Kingston] misconducted himself but as a child when you are dealing with an adult, don’t think you are wiser.

“They gave you the job, so though I don’t know the full story, if what the GFA is saying is anything to go by and if Laryea Kingston has apologised, he is right.

“But for starters, in the profession, if he says he has resigned it is up to him because he didn’t achieve his target and in that case can be offered another chance but if it is about his behaviour, that is his own thing.

“So many coaches who played football to become coaches do not have that patience for the kids because sometimes in the first place they want them to play like them. Before you also played like that you passed through some stage,” Coach Bashir Hayford pointed out.

He, therefore, asked that if Laryea Kingston has apologised, then he can be talked to to return to the helm.
