The Police have assured the general public that they will work with stakeholders to ensure peace in Bawku.
This comes at a time when violent confrontations occurred between the youth and law enforcement officers in Bawku on Thursday, April 10.
The clashes, which reportedly resulted in fatalities, injuries, and the vandalization of private residences, have raised concerns about escalating tensions in the area.
A statement issued by the Police said “The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno (IGP), accompanied by some members of the Police Management Board and other experts from the National Police Headquarters will pay a courtesy call on the esteemed overlord of Bawku, Zugraan Bawku Naaba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II as part of an official visit to Bawku.
“During the visit, the IGP and his team will hold consultations with the overlord of Bawku and seek his counsel and support as the team works together with other stakeholders to resolve some misunderstanding between some youth groups of the town and the police which resulted in violence on 9th April, 2025.
“The Ghana Police Service remains committed to working with all key stakeholders to enhance security in Bawku and surrounding communities.”
Meanwhile, the Minister for the Interior has, on the advice of the Upper East Regional Security Council and by Executive Instrument, reviewed the curfew hours imposed on Bawku Municipality and its environs in the Upper East Region to 6:00 pm to 6:00 am.
The review took effect on Wednesday, April 9, 2025.
A statement issued by the Minister said “there is a total ban on all persons in the afore-mentioned communities and their environs from carrying arms, ammunition or any offensive weapon and any persons found with any arms or ammunition will be arrested and prosecuted.”
The Member of Parliament for Bawku Mahama Ayariga condemned the violent confrontations between the youth and law enforcement officers in Bawku.
The clashes, which reportedly resulted in fatalities, injuries, and the vandalization of his private residence, have raised concerns about escalating tensions in the area.
In an official statement issued while on assignment outside the country, Mr Ayariga expressed deep concern over the loss of lives and the attempted burning of his house.
He attributed the unrest to mounting frustrations among the youth over the pace of resolving the long-standing chieftaincy issues in Bawku, and alleged misconduct by certain law enforcement officers.
“I understand the anger and frustration of the youth about the pace of the resolution of the situation in Bawku and Kusaaug and the misconduct of some misguided law enforcement officers,” he stated.
The MP reaffirmed his unwavering support for a peaceful resolution through legal and constitutional means. He urged residents to exercise restraint and maintain cordial relations with law enforcement agencies to ensure safety and order.

He emphasized the importance of adhering to established laws and judicial decisions in addressing the matter.
He also dismissed what he described as “lies being told” about him by political opponents attempting to capitalize on the current unrest for electoral gain. “The smear campaign on social media will not distract me. In the end, we will be vindicated,” he asserted.
