The National Vice-President of the Poultry Farmers Association, Dr Boris Baidoo (Boris B) has expressed concerns about the dire state of country’s poultry sector.
He said the sector is in urgent need of resuscitation.
Speaking on Ghanakoma morning show on Akoma 87.9FM in Kumasi with Sir John, Dr Baidoo, appealed to the government to save the sector.
He appealed to the government to outline plans to revamp the poultry sector through targeted initiatives aimed at increasing production and reducing food prices.
He stressed the critical role of affordable poultry feed in addressing food inflation and stabilising the prices of eggs and poultry products.
“Government should focus on the production of poultry feed to make it more affordable, which will ultimately help bring down food prices in Ghana,” he stated.
He touched on a proposed “Poultry Farm-to-Table Programme” in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) manifesto, aimed at closing the gap between poultry demand and supply.
The programme, he said, will provide financial resources to poultry farmers, enabling them to expand their operations and increase production.
“A key aspect of this programme is working with the Poultry Farmers Association to provide financial support. This will help farmers bridge the huge gap between demand and supply, while also focusing on making poultry feed more affordable,” he stated.
He disclosed that many of the poultry farms have collapsed within a year due to high cost of production and other factors.
He expressed worry that more businesses could run down if nothing is done about the situation.
“The Ghana poultry industry is on the verge of collapse. If people in authority do not take drastic measures to end this, by a year’s time, we’ll have less than 10 percent of poultry farms operating, because about half of the Poultry farms operating last year, have already collapsed,” he said.
