A pregnant student writing the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) shocked school authorities and WAEC officials when she went into labour during the IT exam.

She gave birth to a healthy baby boy.

The incident happened on Wednesday 11th June, 2025, at the Asenua Presbyterian Junior High School Examination Centre in Mamponteng, in the Kwabre East Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

According to eyewitnesses, the student had excused herself to use the washroom during the exam.

A policewoman assigned to the centre noticed something unusual and decided to follow up only to find the student in active labour.

Desmond Adjei, a teacher at the centre, recounted the dramatic turn of events to the media. “She was quickly moved to the headmaster’s office, and within moments, she delivered her baby right there,” he said.

The situation drew swift support from the local community. The pastor of the Asenua Presbyterian Church, who happened to be nearby, transported the mother and her newborn in his private car to the Victory Hospital in Mampongten.

Both mother and baby are currently receiving medical attention and are said to be in stable condition.

The brave student’s determination to sit for the BECE despite her condition has drawn praise from teachers and community members alike, turning what began as a routine exam day into a moment of unexpected joy and admiration.
