Ghana’s President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, has directed the Members of Parliament-elect for the NDC to nominate the Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin as Speaker for the 9th Parliament.
This will make him the second person to occupy the position for two different Parliaments in the Fourth Republic following the two tenures served by the Rt. Hon. Daniel Francis Annan, who served in the two democratic terms under former President Jerry John Rawlings between 1993 and 2001.
A statement signed by the Spokesperson for the President-elect’s team on transition process, Felix Kwakye Ofosu Sunday, January 05, 2025, said Mr. Mahama arrived at the decision “in consultation with the National Executive and Parliamentary Leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).”
The statement further added that the “Rt. Hon. Bagbin has distinguished himself in the service of Parliament, rising from Member of Parliament for Nadowli to Minority and Majority leader respectively, and subsequently as
Speaker of the 8th Parliament.”
“He brings a wealth of experience to the position, which will prove vital in steering the affairs of Parliament at this critical period in Ghana’s democratic and legislative development,” the statement contained further.
Mahama said he is convinced Bagbin will use his experience to strengthen Parliament “to deliver effectively on its oversight responsibility.”
