The Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu has disclosed that President Mahama has directed the immediate promotion of all eligible deputy directors of education.
The directive comes after the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has threatened to embark on a strike on April 30 over delayed promotion for junior ranked- teachers.
The Minister disclosed this while speaking at the launch of the sanitary pad distribution initiative for school girls on April 24, 2025.
Haruna Iddrisu said the promotion will take place despite unavailability of enough office spaces.
“I have the permission of Mr. President as he’s addressing a number of you here are teachers. One of your major concerns the President just referred to me here is that in his campaign rounds, many of you who are deputy directors of education suffer to hold the ladder above you to become directors because of the unavailability of office space.
“President John Mahama has directed the GES and the Ministry of Education that henceforth all those deputy directors be given their legitimate promotions but accept that even without office space, they will still serve the GES in the capacity of directors,” the Minister noted.
General Secretary of GNAT, Musah Tanko welcomed the directive and expressed gratitude to the sector Minister and the President for the announcement.
GNAT has since suspended its intended strike on April 30, 2025.
“For and on behalf of all teachers in the country, we would like to express our gratitude to His Excellency the President and the honourable sector minister, Haruna Iddrisu and I cannot also leave out the “Director General for his timely intervention by the President…we need to commend the President for this announcement,” he told TV3 in an interview on News Central, April 25, 2025.
