Legal practitioner and social activist, Martin Luther Kpebu, has said Ghanaians are not a people who want to be ruled by one person for more than eight years.

He says every Ghanaian holds the opinion that they can equally do the job of a President just as they feel they can all be coaches when it comes to football, particularly regarding the Ghana Black Stars.

Speaking on Ghana Tonight on TV3 on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, Kpebu, who said the debate over presidential term limits should consider the character of Ghanaians, noted that the country does not look like one that wants prolonged rule by one person.

“Looking at us as Ghanaians, do we look like people who want to be ruled by one person for more than eight years? When we all hold opinions that we can also equally do the job?” he said.

According to him, Ghana is a land of 34 million presidents just as it is often said that Ghana is a land of 34 million coaches in football.

“We are a land of 34 million presidents, just like we say in football; Ghana is a land of about 34 million coaches, etc. So the way we attend to football, everybody having a strong opinion, that’s the same way when it comes to the presidency,” he noted.

He said for that reason, Ghanaians do not look like a people who want to be ruled for a very long time by one person. “So we don’t look like a people who want to be ruled for a very long time by one person,” he stated.

Kpebu said Ghana should be striving to be like the United Kingdom where Prime Ministers are removed quickly when they fail to deliver, citing that the UK has had seven Prime Ministers in just 10 years.

“Look at the UK, in 10 years, they’ve had seven Prime Ministers. So the moment a PM comes he’s not getting it right, they check him out. So that’s what we should be striving for. Not increasing the number of years for one man,” he emphasised.

He stressed that Ghana looks more like a society that wants to emulate the UK system. “Rather we look like a society that wants to be like the UK,” he added.

His comments follow a lawsuit filed by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) at the Supreme Court on July 28, 2026, invoking the court’s original jurisdiction to interpret Articles 58(2) and 66(1), (2) and (3)(a) of the 1992 Constitution on the presidential term limit.
