Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Ranking Member on the Health Commitee in Parliament, has asked the government to do something about the ongoing power rationing otherwise known as dumsor to avert its ramifications.

Mr. Akandoh, who is also the Member of Parliament for Juaboso in the Western North region says the government should exempt the health facilities from the rationing in order not to cause fatalities, after refusing to provide a load shedding timetable for the crisis.

His comments come on the back of a 24-year-old mother who alleges her son died at the Tema General Hospital due to the power outage they recently encountered that went viral on social media.

During an in-studio interview on TV3’s News Central Thursday, March 28, 2024, Mr. Akandoh, bemoaned the powers that be that have failed to perform their responsibilities to warrant the current situation, advising the government on what needs to be done.

“It is quite disheartening to see such stories on our screens and if the powers that be do not care or regard us as human beings enough to have the load shedding timetable to plan our lives, they should not put us into early graves. You don’t need to be a medical doctor to know that a health facility without power cannot function effectively,” he lamented.

He added that, “the immediate sensible thing to do is to consider whether or not, you’ll give a timetable, you should exempt all these health facilities in this country from these power outages. Then you’ll have to consider to do power audit in the various health facilities whether they have standby generators and the capacities that they have. I think that this is not too much to do. So why are we here? It is simply because people are not performing their duties as expected of them.”

A nursing mother has alleged that a doctor at the Tema Government Hospital told her her son couldn’t survive at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit due to the dumsor they encountered on Tuesday, March 26, 2024.
