Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, former Board Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), has pleaded not guilty to four criminal charges related to the failed Accra Sky Train project, which involved the disbursement of $2 million in public funds for a project that never materialised.
Appearing before the High Court in Accra on Monday, May 26, the 80-year-old academic and statesman was granted bail in the sum of GHC10 million with two sureties to be justified.
The court, presided over by Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe, ordered that he deposit all travel documents, including his passport, with the court registry. He must also report to the police once every week until further notice.
Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi is facing four charges, including wilfully causing financial loss to the state, conspiracy, and intentional dissipation of public funds.
The charges are connected to the controversial Sky Train project initiated under his tenure at GIIF, which resulted in the loss of public funds despite no infrastructure being developed.
His co-accused, former GIIF CEO Solomon Asamoah, has also pleaded not guilty. The court has scheduled a case management conference for June 10 at 10:00 a.m., during which pre-trial processes will be outlined and timelines for the trial will be set.
