Communications expert, Professor Enoch Opoku Antwi, has questioned the suspended Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, on why she didn’t raise concerns about the petition that was filed for her impeachment during the previous administration.

The Dean of Business Administration and Communication Arts at the Academic City University College has advised the CJ to let the process unfold rather than publicly disclosing confidential information.

According to Professor Antwi, the process she’s complaining about is constitutional, and her issues with it doesn’t make it illegal.

“The same CJ was exonerated by the ex-President after going through similar process so what’s happened to this process that she is not happy about it?” he asked whilst speaking on the BigIssue segment on TV3’s NewDay on Friday, June 27, 2025.

“I didn’t hear her complain about that petition at that time when Nana Addo was supposed to hear from her,” he said.

Prof. Antwi asserted that the CJ’s demeanour at the press conference was overtly partisan, suspecting that to be her reason for speaking out prematurely  before the constitutional process concluded.

“Unfortunately, listening to her gave me a clear partisan chills. It chills clearly that she is taking a partisan approach about this because if you’re going constitutional, then let’s make the constitutional process end,” he intimated.

The lecturer stressed that the President hasn’t violated the Constitution, contrary to the CJ’s assertions. He implied that the CJ is trying to bend the law to suit her interests.

“The President hasn’t erred in going through this process so wait till the Committee meets you, the Council of State voted, the whole process is in the constitution. So, if you want subvert the constitution for your own interest, then what happens?” he asked.

His comments comes amid the suspended Chief Justice’s remarks on the probe determining the validity of the petitions calling for her removal.

Justice Torkornoo’s suspension on April 22, 2025, came after three petitions alleging misconduct, which President John Mahama deemed sufficient to trigger an investigation under Article 146(6) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.

Following the petitions, a prima facie case was established, prompting the President to suspend the CJ pending investigation by a committee to determine the validity of the allegations.

However, Chief Justice Torkornoo, in an application to the Supreme Court, requested that the petition, typically held in-camera as Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution mandates, be made public. But the request was quashed in the apex court’s ruling.

At a press briefing Wednesday, June 25, 2025, Madam Torkornoo alleged human rights violations and unconstitutional practices in the ongoing impeachment process.
