The Progressive Intellectuals (PI), a prominent think tank, has commended President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government for their significant progress in fulfilling campaign promises within their first 120 days in office.

In a press statement signed by its President, Prof. Yunus Dumbe, the group acknowledged that the administration has already delivered over 50% of its social contract commitments, with measurable progress on an additional 42%.

According to the PI, this demonstrates the government’s dedication to improving governance and addressing critical national issues.

Economic gains and policy execution

The statement highlighted the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi against major international currencies, which has contributed to price stabilization and eased the cost of living for citizens. The PI praised the government’s economic policies but urged sustained prudent fiscal management to maintain these gains.

“The administration’s focus on manifesto implementation is commendable, but time is of the essence. Four years is a short governance period, and every effort must be made to ensure efficient policy delivery,” the statement read.

Concerns over illegal mining (Galamsey)

While applauding the government’s efforts, the group expressed serious concerns over the escalating illegal mining crisis. They called for the immediate repeal of the Legislative Instrument (LI) permitting mining in forest reserves and water bodies.

“The fight against galamsey is taking a troubling turn. We urge stringent security and regulatory measures to safeguard our environment and natural resources,” the statement emphasized.

Call for continued accountability

The Progressive Intellectuals reaffirmed their commitment to supporting transparent and accountable governance, urging the government to remain steadfast in fulfilling its pledges to Ghanaians.

“We congratulate the NDC administration on this milestone and encourage sustained efforts to deepen democratic accountability,” Prof. Dumbe stated.

As the government moves forward, the PI’s endorsement provides a boost, but its caution on galamsey signals that environmental protection remains a critical area requiring urgent attention.
