A directive from the National Labour Commission (NLC) to the Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU) to suspend its strike has been adhered to by the union.
The NLC issued the directive on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, instructing the union to immediately call off its strike.
The directive followed a meeting between leadership of the PSWU and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) to resolve the ongoing issue.
The NLC had summoned the government team—led by the FWSC, along with the Ministry of Employment, Labour Relations, and Pensions (MELRP), and the Ministry of Finance—and representatives from the PSWU to mediate the disagreement.
On October 14, 2024, the PSWU in a statement threatened a strike which was to commence on Monday, October 21, 2024, citing two institution-specific allowances for its members as the reason.
Bernard Adjei, General Secretary of the PSWU has said the union’s decision to suspend the strike is due to the NLC’s assurance that negotiations for their conditions could only take place upon resumption from the strike.
He said they have written to the members to resume work on Monday, October 28, 2024 for negotiations with the FWSC to commence.
“It’s just a matter of communication, but yes, people will fully report to the office on Monday. We’ve suspended the strike as part of the Labour Commission’s directives. If we don’t suspend it, how would Fair Wages meet us for negotiations.
He added that failure on the part of government to adhere to its part of the deal will see the workers revert to their earlier decision without delay.
“Institutions should know that there are consequences for every action and decision we take. I can tell you that there are management who also want to punish our people. And we will also not do anything to put our members in harm’s way,” he told Accra-based JoyNews Friday, October 25, 2025.
