The Public Utility Regulatory Commission has hinted of an upward adjustment of 21% and 27.15% in water and electricity tariffs respectively, effective September 1, 2022.

The commission will also implement its quarterly tariff review in line with its rate setting guidelines for quarterly review of natural gas, electricity and water tariffs with the change of variables (exchange rate & inflation) in mind.

Executive Secretary of PURC, Dr. Ishmael Ackah speaking to the media indicated the Commission was guided by the Supreme interests of consumers and the general economic conditions prevailing in the country.

According to him, economic factors, exchange rate, inflation, cost of production, among others, the utility related factors, your operation, maintenance and other investment and most significantly, the general conditions of the consumer who pay or these were considered in arriving at a decision.

He explained that for the first time in the Commission’s history, small scale enterprises are going to pay lesser tariffs compared to residential consumer class to enable them reduce cost to expand their tentacles to employ more hands.

“For the first time since the establishment of PURC 25 years ago, small scale industries such as hairdressers, beauty salons, barbering shops, dressmaking shops, welders, mechanics, cold shops, vulcanisers, carpenters among others will pay a tariff lower than the residential consumer class.

“This is to address the high electricity cost for industrial customers which has been identified over the past 10 years in their business barometer as the key challenge affecting the competitiveness of Ghanaian industries in the gloabl marketplace.

“The objective here is to support industries to expand and enhance its ability to generate decent job for Ghanaians. This tariff is therefore a first step in a gradual process to invest the tarrixf structure ove the next few years in support of the national goal for industrialisation,” he expressed.
