Electricity consumers in Hundator, a community in Bekwai, can now have a stable power supply after a newly installed 200kVA transformer was connected to augment the existing 100kVA unit, ending weeks of unstable power supply.

The upgrade followed a direct intervention by the Executive Secretary of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission, PURC, Dr. Shafic Sulaman.

The problem came to the Commission’s attention when Mr. Yeboah Obiri, a resident of Hundator, filed a complaint over a suspected faulty 100kVA transformer that had left many households without reliable power.

According to Mr. Obiri, the situation forced the Electricity Company of Ghana, ECG Ashanti Region, to share the load with adjoining communities, resulting in erratic power supply, low voltage, and frequent outages.

The Ashanti Regional ECG office indicated it did not have a similar transformer available for immediate replacement, it therefore requested some time to resolve the matter.

The Executive Secretary, who has handled similar cases in the past, intervened, using his good offices to engage the Managing Director of ECG and to request urgent action to resolve the supply challenge affecting Bekwai.

In response, ECG moved swiftly to install a 200 kVA transformer to operate alongside the existing 100 kVA unit. The new higher-capacity transformer is designed to share the load, reduce pressure on the older unit, and accommodate the growing electricity demand in Hundator.

Since the 200kVA transformer was energized, residents have reported a significant improvement. Voltage has stabilized, power cuts have reduced, and businesses that rely on steady electricity can now operate without constant disruptions.

Community members have expressed appreciation to the PURC for the swift intervention.

“We were struggling for weeks, but PURC stepped in and got ECG to act,” one resident said. “The new 200kVA transformer has changed everything for us. Our supply is steady now.”

The PURC has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting consumer interests and ensuring utility service providers deliver safe, reliable, and quality electricity to all communities across the country.

The Commission says it will continue to monitor service delivery in Bekwai to ensure complaints are resolved promptly.
