Several widows from the Fanteakwa District of the Eastern Region have been supported by the Queen Mother of Akyem Dwenase, Nana Appeaa Sarpomaa Kumankuma I at a special ceremony at Dwenase.

The move is to help make lives comfortable for these mothers who do not have anybody to support them.

The items they received included bags of rice, cooking oil, packs of spices, yards of wax print and an undisclosed amount of cash.

Apart from the donation, Nana Appeaa Sarpomaa Kumankuma and the traditional leaders of the community spent time eating and dancing with the widows.

Widows face multiple challenges, including limited healthcare access, property rights, social support, and harmful traditional practices, impacting their well-being.

This usually makes them vulnerable in the society as their situation compels them to depend on charity from relatives and friends.

Nana Appeaa Sarpomaa Kumankuma in an interview with Onua News indicated that the gesture is to honour her predecessor the late Nana Ama Fobiaa Arkosah Appeaa II.

She maintained that widows are very vulnerable and need to be assisted so that life becomes bearable for them.

“Widows are the most vulnerable people in our society, so this is to put smiles on their faces especially the widows who do not have anyone to support them.

And I am planning to establish a fund whereby individuals, corporate entities and philanthropists could donate something to help create small businesses to enable them to become self-dependent,” she revealed.

She used the occasion to laud the children of the late Nana Ama Fobiaa Arkosah Appeaa II for funding the programme and encouraged the general public to be generous to widows.
