A former Member of Parliament for Salaga South Constituency, Adam Salifu Braimah, has presented 40 packets of roofing sheets to the Kalande community to support victims of Thursday night’s rainstorm disaster.

One person died with hundreds of residents including women and children displaced as a result of the rainstorm.

The heavy rainstorm, accompanied by fierce winds that lasted for almost an hour, tore through the Kalande community, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

A middle-aged woman and mother of three, Ramatu, died after a roof fell on her.

The disaster has been described by residents as the worst in the history of the community.

Education and other social activities have been affected as the entire upper primary block of Kalande Presby Primary School is ripped off.

Power supply to the community has also been affected.

Assemblyman for the area, Imoru Charles, told 3news.com that the level of destruction is severe.

“I have gone round to assess the impact and I can say that the devastation is severe.”

I can only appeal to NADMO, the East Gonja Municipal Assembly and other benevolent individuals and organizations to come in and support the victims in this trying time,” he said.

“It’s unfortunate to see the conditions of displaced victims, especially women and children. Kalande is my home just like Kpembe and it is my responsibility to support in any way possible to redeem these victims from the unfortunate situation they find themselves. “

Climate change experts have warned that such extreme weather events may become more frequent, emphasising the need for proactive measures to mitigate the impact.

Municipal Chief Executive for East Gonja, Richard Broni, assured the people that the Assembly will immediately mobilize some resources to support the victims while talking with NADMO.

“I am sad to see the extent of damage caused on properties and the unfortunate loss of a life due to the disaster. But let me assure you that we shall immediately work around to get more support for the victims. “

“In the meantime, we shall ensure the primary school is reroofed for academic activities to continue so our children are not left behind,” he said.

For his part, Chief of the Kalande community, Nana Pempamade II, appealed for more support.

Meanwhile, the deceased person has since been buried in accordance with Islamic norms.
