Majority Leader in Parliament, James Agalga, has announced that President John Dramani Mahama has approved the recruitment of 1,200 additional staff for the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) as part of efforts to strengthen the Commission’s capacity to combat drug trafficking.
Speaking at a press conference in Parliament on Thursday, September 24, Agalga said the recruitment would help address staffing gaps within NACOC and improve its ability to operate effectively across the country.
“His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama’s government has approved the recruitment of another 1,200 staff for NACOC, a bold and consistent move that will go a long way to fill the deficit in the Commission’s staffing,” he said.
The Majority Leader further stated that the government had already significantly increased NACOC’s workforce, including the training of 495 new officers in 2025.
“This government has more than doubled NACOC’s staff, training 495 new officers in 2025 alone, the largest number of officers to ever graduate from NACOC,” he said.
According to Mr Agalga, the expansion was not merely about increasing the number of personnel but ensuring that NACOC had the capacity to respond to drug-related threats and maintain a presence in communities and at border points.
“This isn’t just a number. It’s the difference between an agency that can respond and an agency that can be there in communities, at borders, along the path traffickers go to exploit,” he noted.
The recruitment comes at a time the country has experienced series of drug seizures and alleged trafficking through its borders. The additional staff is expected to boost the Commission’s fight against drug trafficking in the country.
