A major road rehabilitation project in Ashaiman has been temporarily suspended following the death of a construction worker at the site.
According to reports, the tragic incident occurred when a worker unaware his colleague was sleeping beneath an excavator and moved the vehicle, fatally crushing him.
The accident happened amid ongoing works at the Ashaiman interchanges, aimed at repairing severely deteriorated roads in the area.
In response to the incident, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Ashaiman, Freeman Tsekpo, announced that construction will resume after traditional rites are performed to pacify the site.
“After their break, one of the workers was resting under the machine. Unfortunately, the operator didn’t know he was there and moved the vehicle. We lost a life. Traditional sacrifices in Ashaiman are conducted on Fridays, so the rites will be performed then, and contractors should be able to resume work from Saturday,” he said.
The MCE also unveiled plans to decongest Ashaiman’s streets by relocating traders from pavements to designated market areas.
He highlighted the existence of three markets: the main market, the newly built Agile Market with over 1,200 shops, and the Underbridge Market.
“Once we begin decongesting, no trader can claim they lack a space to operate. We’re also planning to barricade pavements to prevent pedestrian overflow onto roads, ensuring smoother traffic flow,” he said.
To complement the decongestion effort, the Assembly is deploying city guards and a taskforce, with additional personnel to be recruited for sustained enforcement.
“We’re focused on ensuring traders do not return to the streets and that sanitation rules are followed. If there’s resistance, we’ll invoke our bylaws to maintain order,” Mr. Tsekpo emphasized.
The Ashaiman Assembly says it remains committed to improving infrastructure, enhancing public safety, and creating a more organized urban environment.
