Eight persons believed to be youth of Damongo in the Savannah region have sustained various degrees of gun shot wounds following an alleged attack on the Damongo District Police station by a cross section of the youth.

The attack is said to be as result of the arrest of some seven youth of Buipe in the Central Gonja district who vandalized and set ablaze structures belonging to a group of Fulani settlers.

OnuaOnline gathered the seven suspects were moved to Damongo, capital of the Savannah region but the youth of Damongo on hearing about the arrest besieged the police station to demand their release.

This resulted in a confrontation between the youth and the police. Gunshots were allegedly fired by the police injuring eight people in the process.

The victims are receiving treatment at the Damongo Government Hospital.

Meanwhile, a police vehicle with registration number GP 516 transporting the seven suspects to Tamale is reported to have been involved in an accident at Tailorpe, a community around Busunu on the Fufulso-Damongo highway.

The occupants, seven suspects and eight police officers have all sustained various degrees of injuries.

It will be recalled that on December 20, 2022, some irate youth at Buipe demonstrated against the enskinment of a Fulani Mande chief by Buipewura Abdulai Jinapor II.

According to the youth, the Buipewura had no such authority to unilaterally offer part of the Gonjaland to Fulanis without the consent of the Gonjaland Council headed by the Yagbonwura.

The youth even claimed the Savanna Regional House of Chiefs had crumbled and that members were no longer attending its meetings due to the action of the Buipewura.

They also said it was even a novelty that flies in the face of the Gonja tradition and culture to have a Fulani chief in a Gonja chief palace, although history has proven that Gonja has primordial relations with the Fulanis, talking about the story of how a Fulani mallam, Fati Murikpe, helped his friend Sumaila Ndewura Jakpa to conquer the present modern day Gonjaland.

Call for arrest

Meanwhile, Buipewura Abdulai Jinapor II has called for the arrest of the suspected youth of Buipe who attacked a Fulani settlement on the land following some ongoing misunderstanding between the Jinapor palace and the youth.

According to the Buipewura, the peace of Buipe can not be traded for any selfish interest of the youth.

Meanwhile, Buipewura Jinapor II following the recommendation of a seven member committee he set up to investigate the recent uprising at Buipe has diskined the embattled Fulani chief of Mande known as Bure Ibrahim among others.

The Buipewura made the pronouncement in his Palace on Monday, January 16, 2023.
