National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has bemoaned the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) for taking the Ashanti region for granted despite the Region’s unflinching support for the party.

Mr. Gyamfi says even though the NPP has been receiving overwhelming votes from resident of the region over the past years, it has nothing to show for the people in terms of developmental projects.

In a circular issued by the Head of the NDC’s communication bureau Tuesday, March 26, 2024, Sammy Gyamfi indicated that “our NPP friends must bow their heads in shame for monumentally failing and taking for granted the good people of the Ashanti Region. The day of accountability is fast approaching and there will be no hiding place left for the failed Akufo-Addo/Bawumia NPP government.”

His comments come on the back of the Regional and Roads and Highway ministers struggle to mention five monumental projects made in the Ashanti region after assuming office seven years now.

He went ahead to list fifteen (15) projects by the NDC administration in the region between 2009 and 2015, cautioning the government of the day of accountability which is reckoning.

Find below the full circular he released to that effect:

In the past couple of days, we have seen both the Minister for Roads and Highways, Asenso Boakye and the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah, fumble and struggle to mention just five (5) major achievements, initiated and completed by the ruling New Patriotic Party in the Ashanti Region.

These two embarrassing episodes (the evidence of which can be seen in the attached videos to this post), are ample testament to the fact that, the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia/NPP government has failed the good people of the Ashanti Region, their electoral world bank.

Even though the Ashanti region has always voted overwhelmingly for the governing NPP, that political tradition has not kept faith with the good people of Ashanti over the years. It therefore comes to us as no surprise, that after nearly eight (8) years in government, the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration has very little to show relative to significant developmental projects in the Ashanti region.

This is in spite of the fact that, the current Akufo-Addo/Bawumia/NPP government is the most resourced government in history, having had access to a total resource envelope of over GHS820 billion in the last seven (7) years.

On the contrary, the NDC has a lot to show in
the Ashanti region relative to significant developmental projects in the region. For the sake of brevity, let me list just fifteen (15) major projects that were initiated and completed in the Ashanti region by the erstwhile NDC Government (2009-2016):

1. Kumasi Airport redevelopment Phase 1
2. Redevelopment of Kejetia Market- Phase 1
3. Atonsu market redevelopment
4. Tafo market redevelopment
5. Asawase market redevelopment
6. Ultra-mordern Eye Center at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH)
7. $21.6 million Mampong Water project
8. Construction and completion of Rattary Park
9. Adugyama Community Day SHS (Eblock)
10. Adobewura Community Day SHS (Eblock)
11. Juaso Banka Community Day SHS (Eblock)
12. Offinso Asuoso Community Day SHS (Eblock)
13. Oyoko Community Day SHS (Eblock)
14. Agric Nzema Community Day SHS (Eblock)
15. Parkoso Community Day SHS (Eblock)

Our NPP friends must bow their heads in shame for monumentally failing and taking for granted the good people of the Ashanti Region. The day of accountability is fast approaching and there will be no hiding place left for the failed Akufo-Addo/Bawumia NPP government.

NB: This list is not exhaustive, as it excludes significant road projects and several other major projects that were either initiated or completed by the erstwhile NDC government between 2009-2016 in the Ashanti region.
