A former Chief Justice, Sophia Abena Boafoa Akuffo, has described the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources as an “unnecessary” ministry.
Her argument is that the ministry has failed to fulfill the purpose for which it was created, adding that Ghana has become dirtier prior to the creation of the Sanitation Ministry.
According to her, there are so many laws on sanitation but the since they are not working, the impact is not being felt, making the creation of the ministry a useless venture.
In a yet to be aired interview with Alfred Ocansey on Ghana Tonight Thursday, July 25, 2024, the former Head of the Judiciary insisted that ‘Making Accra the cleanest city in Africa’ birthed by the President to create the Sanitation Ministry has not seen the light of day, making its existence a waste of tax payers’ money.
She contends the best the nation should have opted was to allow the Local Government Ministry handle the sanitation in the country rather than creating an entire ministry for it.
“But we have so many things are not working. Let’s take sanitation. What sanitation law don’t we have? What ordinances from the days of ordinances to regulations all the way to date? What enactments don’t we have? What departments don’t we have?
“We have a ministry for that matter, which was totally unnecessary because it’s not a ministry that is going to do the work. Sanitation is the work of local government. Sanitation Ministry is an unnecessary ministry,” she stated without mincing words.
She stated that the sector has achieved nothing since its creation.
“What have they done? They were pursuing the president’s promise of making Accra the cleanest city. Is it? Isn’t it dirtier than it was before the ministry was set up? Isn’t it?
“When was the last time you even saw any, other than neighborhoods getting together to clean gutters, when was the last time you saw a sanitation worker doing anything? It’s been, for me, I haven’t seen one on my road or in my neighborhood,” she disclosed.
