Thousands of residents in the Akontombra District of the Western North Region turned out for the National Sanitation Day exercise, an initiative by President John Dramani Mahama aimed at promoting environmental cleanliness across the country.

Residents took to the principal streets, markets, and public spaces to sweep, desilt choked gutters, and collect refuse as part of efforts to improve sanitation and reduce sanitation-related diseases in the district.

The exercise also saw the active participation of security agencies, including the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Immigration Service, and other security personnel, who joined residents in the clean-up and helped maintain order throughout the exercise.

The District Chief Executive commended residents and the security services for the massive turnout, describing sanitation as a shared responsibility that must be sustained beyond the National Sanitation Day exercise.

Environmental Health Officers supervised the clean-up, ensuring proper waste collection and disposal while educating residents on the importance of good sanitation practices.

Officials from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) also monitored the exercise and sensitised participants on the need to protect the environment and maintain clean surroundings.

Authorities in the Akontombra District are urging residents to maintain the momentum and make cleanliness a daily habit to ensure a healthier and safer environment.
