The Bafana Bafana of South Africa dashed the hopes of Cape Verde on Saturday after beating the West Africans 2-1 on penalties in the last quarter-final clash of the Africa Cup of Nations.

The clash had ended goalless after extra time.

But South Africa’s goalkeeper, Ronwen Williams, became the hero of the day as he saved four of the five kicks by their opponents.

By Williams’ heroics, the 1996 champions sailed through 1-2 on penalties.

They will face Nigeria in the semi-finals on Wednesday, February 7.

Earlier, Ivory Coast beat Mali 2-1 after extra time to progress to the semi-finals.

They came from a goal down to beat the Eagles with Oumar Diakité scoring the winner at the death of full time.
