South Africa will be hosting the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON 2026), the country’s Deputy Sports Minister has announced.

Addressing a gathering at the Hollywoodbets Super League Awards 2025, Peace Mabe encouraged Banyana Banyana to make qualification to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup to be held in Brazil easy.

“Tonight, I will like to announce that South Africa will be hosting the 2026 WAFCON which we all know is a qualifying tournament for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup to be held in Brazil.”

This comes as a surprise as Morocco, who hosted the 2024 edition just last year, were scheduled to host the 2026 edition in March.

The draw for the tournament was held just last month with South Africa drawn in Group B and Morocco in Group A as hosts.

The North Africans are yet to come out officially on this development while the continent’s football-governing body, CAF, is also yet to comment on the reports.

Morocco beat Ghana on penalties on their way to the final of the last tournament but lost to record champions Nigeria’s Super Falcons.
