The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Western Cape has confirmed the murder of a Ghanaian in Nyanga, saying the circumstances of the killing is believed to be linked to extortion.

In a statement on its Facebook page, July 2, SAPS identified the deceased as 35-year-old Kwabena Boagen, who was shot dead on Monday, June 29, 2026, at about 3:45 p.m. at the Nyanga Terminus in front of the NTG Hair Salon and Shoe Repairs.

According to police, Mr. Boagen was attacked by unidentified gunmen in circumstances believed to be connected to extortion. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Emergency Medical Services personnel.

Police said a murder case has been opened and is being investigated by detectives from the Nyanga unit, who have since contacted the victim’s relatives and conveyed their condolences.

Investigators disclosed that although the deceased lived in the Khayelitsha area, he worked in Nyanga. A post-mortem examination is currently being conducted in line with South African procedures.

The SAPS also responded to a statement issued by Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the alleged murder of another Ghanaian in Khayelitsha.

According to the police, they have no official record of such an incident and have appealed to the Ghanaian authorities to provide details to assist with investigations.

“With regard to the media release issued by the Ghanaian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the South African Police Service has no record of the alleged murder in Khayelitsha. An earnest plea is therefore made to the authorities concerned to provide details of the alleged Khayelitsha incident to the SAPS to enable further investigation,” the statement said.

Police said detectives are actively pursuing leads to identify and arrest those responsible for the killing.

The latest incident comes amid heightened concerns over the safety of foreign nationals in South Africa following anti-immigration protests in some communities.
