Captain Smart has bemoaned the unabated fall of the Cedi to the US dollar and other major currencies on globe.

The Onua TV/FM Maakye host said Friday, October 14, 2022 that the value of the Cedi depict there is no wise person in the New Patriotic Party.

According to Mr. Smart, the NPP have lost track of the economy making the Cedi depreciate to the dollar continuously.

“Now Bawumia cannot do anything about the Cedi. Just look at his theCedi is always going down. What do you expect businessmen to do again? There is nobody that can do anything to reduce the depreciation and that means there is no wise person in the NPP to do that,” he said Friday, October 14, 2022.

As of close of business Thursday, October 13, 2022, the Bank of Ghana rate for a Cedi to the dollar was GH₵10.80.

The depreciation of the Cedi among other reasons have forced businesses in the Ashanti regional capital to close with the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) hinting of replicating the move in the national capital in solidarity with their colleagues in Kumasi.

The striking businessmen have entered day five of their protest following some inconclusive meetings with authorities.

The Ashanti regional NPP have thrown their support for the shops closure saying government must do something about the falling cedi and its new approach of tax collection.

Meanwhile, the Traders Advocacy Group Ghana has asked its striking members to open their shops.

The leadership of the traders group made the call after an indoor meeting with the Ashanti regional minister Thursday, October 13, 2022.

The Public Relations Officer of the group, Paul Asabre Pinamang, who addressed the media after meeting with the regional minister disclosed Simon Osei Mensah has assured that “their grievances shall be channelled to the appropriate quarters.”

He further stated that among other concerns, was the stationing of GRA officers at their shops and that the regional minister has directed for the officers to be withdrawn.

“We petitioned the president through the regional minister. The regional minister has told us that he has directed the GRA to withdraw their officers from our shops and has assured us that our petition shall be tabled before the President and Parliament for consideration,” he said.
