Three tertiary teacher unions have announced their decision to strike over the delay in release of exchange rate for their book and research allowance payment.

The unions, comprising the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG), and the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG), say the delay has created uncertainty amongst their members, leaving them frustrated.

They lament that their members rely on this critical support for their research and academic work due to the delay in payment.

On Monday, June 9, 2025, the unions issued a joint statement outlining resolutions from a Sunday, June 8 meeting, where they are demanding the government to urgently disburse the funds to their members.

The groups say they will lay down their tools if the government does not commence disbursement by June 13, 2025.

“We stress that this allowance is a statutory entitlement under our Conditions of Service and an essential resource for advancing research, teaching, and knowledge sharing.

“We hereby notify all stakeholders that if the government fails to commence the payment process by the 13th of June 2025, this will be considered a strike notice by UTAG, TUTAG, and CETAG across all campuses to the government,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, the unions are asking the government to resolve the disruption on the academic calendar and prioritise the welfare of teachers and the academic community.
