Former Member of Parliament for Tema East and former Greater Accra Regional Minister, Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover, has taken a strong swipe at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and the government over the handling of the arrest and subsequent hospitalisation of Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as ‘Wontum’.
Speaking on Onua FM’s morning show, Yen Nsempa Mr. Titus-Glover described the circumstances surrounding Wontumi’s detention and health emergency as “capricious and misleading”, accusing EOCO of keeping the party and the public in the dark.
“What is this? What is with the nose mask and capricious arrests?” he questioned sharply, referring to reports that masked men were involved in Wontumi’s re-arrest after his earlier appearance at the CID Headquarters.
He further alleged that EOCO had deceived party lawyers and officials about Wontumi’s location, following his collapse during the interrogation.
“All this moment, Chairman Wontumi’s whereabouts remain unknown. EOCO misled us; the location they claimed he would be taken to is not where he is,” he told host, Nana Yaa Brefo Danso.
NDC repeating NPP’s mistakes
Mr. Titus-Glover, visibly agitated during the interview, also took aim at what he described as a dangerous political trend of weaponising law enforcement agencies. He said while the NPP had been criticised for similar actions in the past, the current administration led by President John Mahama was now doing the same.
“The same thing the NPP did and Ghanaians complained about it, the NDC is doing. Continue, President Mahama, continue, okay.”
The former Regional Minister also accused elements within the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of being involved in illegal mining (galamsey), yet escaping public scrutiny.
“The NDC is engaging in galamsey and no one is talking about it,” he claimed.
Background
Chairman Wontumi was initially invited for questioning by the police on Monday, May 26, 2025, and returned the next day for further interrogation. He was granted bail on Tuesday, May 27, with two sureties after being cautioned on allegations of illegal mining, water pollution, and unauthorised entry into a forest reserve.
However, shortly after leaving the CID headquarters, he was reportedly picked up by masked operatives and taken to EOCO for further questioning, this time over alleged dealings with EXIM Bank.
He fell ill during the interrogation and was rushed to an undisclosed hospital, according to his lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi.
As of Wednesday morning, May 28, 2025, his precise location remains unknown, fueling speculation and drawing concern from NPP executives and supporters.
