The Doctors Association of Tamale Teaching Hospital have resumed emergency services after 48 hours of suspending emergency and other critical services.

However, the suspension of other services such as General OPD, Antenatal clinic, Specialist clinic, Paediatrics OPD still hold.

The decision to resume emergency services by the doctors follows a mediation by the king of Dagbon , Ndan Ya-Na Abukari the second, who earlier appealed to the doctors association to suspend their strike for the sake of humanity.

The suspension of services by the doctors association of the tamale teaching hospital, follows an altercation between the Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and the head of the accident and emergency unit, Dr Valentine Akulpwa when the Minister paid a surprise visit to the hospital.

OPD, emergency and other services were greatly impacted as most patients who visited the hospital were turned away. The OPD was virtually empty on Friday, April 25 2025.

The King of Dagbon, Ndan Ya-Na Abukari the second, on Friday April 25, sent a delegation to the hospital to mediate with the aggrieved doctors.

The delegation of chiefs from the Gbewaa palace was led by Zangbalin Lana Yakubu.

Presenting a speech on behalf on the Ya-Na, Zangbalin Lana Yakubu emphasized that the cessation of official emergency services by the doctors association of the tamale teaching hospital has had far reaching consequences.

“As a neutral facilitator, we will convey your concerns to the Minister and encourage him to take the necessary steps to address your grievances.

“However, we implore you to consider the lives that hung in the balance, the cessation of the emergency services has far-reaching consequences and we fear for the well-being of those who cannot afford to wait.

“We appeal to your professionalism, compassion and commitment to the democratic oath. Your dedication to saving lives is what brought you this noble profession and we urge you to in the interim find a way of ensuring essential emergency services,” he said.

Director of Pharmacy at the tamale teaching hospital Dr Salifu Alhassan Tia, expressed gratitude to the king of Dagbon for stepping in to find a solution to the situation.
