The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has declared its intentions that they will not compromise on their constitutional rights on the alter of a broke economy.

According to the Union, they will hold accountable, whoever is elected to become president to meet their demands as long as those demands are legitimate.

The TUC was responding to a statement made by the flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama, that Ghanaians, especially labour unions, should grant him some “honeymoon” to fix the broken economy before making some demands, should he regain power.

But responding to the comments, Deputy General Secretary of the TUC, Joshua Ansah, has been telling TV3’s Daniel Opoku Tuesday, January 16, 2024, that after the 2024 polls, “whoever becomes president of this very country must be ready to meet workers and ensure that workers’ demands are met without any questions.

“Workers in this country, for 66 years after independence, have suffered and sacrificed a lot and we think that anybody who wants to become the president must be ready to ensure that labour rights are not dealt with with a child’s gloves, we are going to demand what is our right or what is good for us.”

Meanwhile, Prof. Ransford Gyampo of the University of Ghana has also laid a condition under which Mahama’s plea would be granted.

John Dramani Mahama, has, during a ‘Campus Connect’ event in Hohoe as part of his ‘Building the Ghana we want Together Tour’ said he is being measured with his promises and wants Ghanaians to grant his government some demand holidays if they regain power, considering the manner with which the economy has been sunk by the ruling government.

He says the development has forced him to be prudent with his promises since the means would not be available to fulfill any huge promises.

“This country is broke, and, so, we will beg you that when we come into office, give us a bit of a honeymoon. Let’s put things in place so that we bring the economy back onto its feet,”he said.

“And I will plead with the teacher union: GNAT, NAGRAT, UTAG, and TEWU and all of them; I know all of you are clamouring for allowances.

“Let me caution you that in 2025 when we take over, we will show you the books and the finances of this country, and when we have done that, we can accede to your demands again, and that’s why I’m being very measured in the promises that I make because we all know the crisis in which this country has been plunged,” he indicated.
