The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has expressed concern over new tariffs announced by the United States, warning that the move could further destabilize an already fragile global economy.

This follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of sweeping new tariffs on goods imported from the rest of the world arguing that it will boost the US economy and protect jobs.

In a statement issued on Thursday, April 03, 2025, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said the Fund is still analyzing the full economic impact of the measures but noted they pose “a significant risk to the global outlook at a time of sluggish growth.”

“It is important to avoid steps that could further harm the world economy,” Georgieva stressed, calling on the U.S. and its trading partners to engage in constructive dialogue to de-escalate trade tensions and reduce economic uncertainty.

The IMF said it would release a more detailed assessment in its upcoming World Economic Outlook, set to be published during the IMF/World Bank Spring Meetings later this month.
