In a significant gesture of support, the US Embassy in Ghana has donated 90 motorcycles to the Ghana Health Service (GHS), strengthening the country’s healthcare system.
The donation was received by the Director of Health Administration and Support Services Dr. Ebo Hammond, who expressed gratitude for the kind gesture. This development comes as the GHS continues to navigate challenges in its operations.
Dr. Ebo Hammond, Director of Health Administration and Support Services at the GHS, emphasized that even though the gesture would go a long way in enhancing healthcare delivery, the USAID’s absence due to President Trump’s new policy will not hinder the operations of the Ghana Health Service as it remains committed to ensuring uninterrupted healthcare services.
“Giving us these motorcycles is very significant, but we have well established system to carry out our own activities… we shouldn’t be sleeping in them… our system is set up in such a way that even in the absence of aid we should be able to operate,” he said.
Dr. Ebo Hammond also announced the construction of 10 liquid oxygen plants across the country. These facilities are designed to improve the distribution of oxygen, a critical resource for patients with respiratory conditions and other health emergencies. The plants, he said will significantly improve oxygen supply chains, ensuring that healthcare facilities have a steady supply of this life-saving gas.
“During the COVID, we realised that a lot of people died because of unavailability of oxygen… we are installing ten (10) liquid oxygen plants around the country to help spread oxygen availability,” he said.
These facilities are set to enhance the distribution of oxygen, a critical resource in patient care, particularly for those suffering from respiratory conditions and also is to deal with deaths associated with oxygen unavailability.
