An economist and lecturer at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Dr Eric Boachie Yiadom, has urged utility companies to tackle operational losses before pushing for tariff increases.
Speaking on TV3’s Business Focus on Monday, 15 September 2025, Dr Yiadom stressed that utilities must be given “clear and realistic targets” to reduce losses.
He argued that demonstrating efforts to improve efficiency would justify future tariff adjustments.
“Utilities need clear targets on cutting losses,” he stated
The Economist also noted that, “If we are able to cut the losses, then we would be able to increase the rate, so that we would know that some efforts are being made to address the challenge.”
The call comes at a time when Ghana’s power and water providers are pressing for higher tariffs, citing rising operational costs, currency depreciation, and mounting debt. However, concerns remain over inefficiencies and the high level of technical and commercial losses recorded in the sector.
Industry analysts say addressing systemic waste and revenue leakages could ease the financial pressure on consumers while helping companies sustain their operations.
