The Upper West Regional Police Command has arrested 34 suspects in connection with a deadly shooting incident linked to the ongoing chieftaincy dispute in the District Capital of Wa East, Funsi in the Upper West Region.
According to a press release issued by the Public Affairs Unit of the Ghana Police Service on May 24, 2026, the incident led to the death of three young men.
The police said information received on the night of May 22, 2026, indicated that two persons had been shot and killed at the Gbelonosi section of Funsi.
Police officers who rushed to the scene confirmed the death of 37-year-old Fufulu Nandugu and 22-year-old Yussif Samahan.
The statement added that during subsequent police operations and investigations, a third victim, identified as 20-year-old Amadu Lukman, was also found dead in the community.
A reinforcement team led by the Upper West Regional Police Commander, DCOP Francis Yiribaare, later visited the community to support ongoing investigations and help maintain law and order.
The police disclosed that exhibits retrieved during the operation included a shotgun, bow and arrows, gunpowder, spent cartridges, talisman-embedded smocks and a medallion believed to be linked to the chieftaincy tensions between rival gates in the area.
All the suspects and retrieved exhibits have since been conveyed to Wa to assist with further investigations.
The Police Administration expressed condolences to the bereaved families and assured the public of its commitment to bringing all persons responsible for the disturbance to justice.
The command also appealed to residents and stakeholders to remain calm, avoid acts of reprisal and cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information to support investigations.
Meanwhile, intensified police patrols and other security measures have been deployed in the community to maintain peace and security.
