The Member of Parliament for Talensi, Benson Tongo Baba has said development is not his responsibility as an MP in reaction to lack of furniture for pupils in his constituency.

In a video intercepted by Onua TV/FM’s morning show, Maakye Friday, August 12, 2022, pupils at Yagzori primary school at Talensi were found writing on the bare floor in a dilapidated classroom without doors and windows.

Reacting to the development on the show, B.T. Baba as he is popularly known, earlier asserted he has had a discussion on the issue three months ago with the DCE and things are under control.

However, when Yaa Titi Okrah asked how delicate or otherwise he sees the issue, he flared up saying such developments are not his responsibility but that of the central government.

“Yes, I’m aware of it and it is not the only case in the constituency, in the region or in the country. So when I got to know of it, I contacted the District Director of Education and she told me she has written to the ministry and she has a copy of the letter for me to peruse. So the issue is being tackled,” he said.

He blamed those who look up to MPs in such situations instead of the central government.

“Mostly when things happen like that, you people concentrate on the MP. What has the MP got to do with these developmental issues which are supposed to be handled by the central government? The advocacy and the lobbying that we do is the highest level that we can do. We don’t have the resources to be able to provide all those things. So out of the little resources we have, we spread it over the constituency based on education, health and other social intervention,” he added.

The situation at Yagzori primary according to the MP “is a big project of providing furniture to schools that do not have furniture and it has always been done by the central government through the district assembly.”
