As heavy rains loom on the horizon, the Shama Municipal Assembly is stepping up efforts to mitigate the impact of potential flooding across the municipality.
This proactive move follows a recent alert issued by the Ghana Meteorological Agency, warning of heavy downpours and thunderstorms expected in the coming weeks.
The forecast has raised concerns among residents, particularly in flood-prone communities, where memories of past flood events still linger. In response, the Assembly has launched a comprehensive desilting campaign aimed at clearing choked drains and waterways.
The initiative is being rolled out across known flood hotspots in the municipality, with the goal of improving drainage and ensuring free flow of rainwater.
Speaking with the Municipal Enviromental Officer, Emmanuel Kudor, he said the Assembly has identified key flood-prone areas, aiming to reduce the risk and protect lives ahead of the rainy season.
He further urged residents to actively participate in the desilting exercises and avoid indiscriminate dumping of waste into drains.
“We are calling on all Assembly members to mobilize their communities for clean-up exercises,” said Emmanuel Kudor, the Municipal Environmental Officer. “It’s important that residents not only participate in these activities but also stop dumping refuse into drains. Flood prevention is a shared responsibility,” he said.
The Assembly has also mapped out key areas at risk of flooding, where intensified interventions are currently underway.
These include trimming of overgrown trees, removal of weak branches, and inspection of buildings deemed structurally vulnerable.
Municipal NADMO Director, Michael Nyan, assured the public that his outfit is on high alert and prepared to respond to any emergencies that may arise during the rainy season.
According to him, designated areas have been marked across the municipality as safe havens for residents who might be affected.
“Our teams are on the ground conducting routine checks, and we’re working closely with the Assembly and other stakeholders to ensure we’re ready,” he said.
Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant, cooperate with local officials, and take all necessary precautions as the rains approach.
The Assembly’s preparedness efforts mark a significant step toward safeguarding lives and property in what could be another challenging rainy season for the region.
