Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has reiterated the government’s resolve to keeping the least number of ministers in the history of the country’s democracy.
The Minister has dismissed claims that President Mahama has appointed numerous ministers and staffers akin to the mean government he promised Ghanaians.
Kwakye Ofosu was speaking to the media after a special Cabinet meeting where he clarified on the brouhaha about the government’s appointment, reemphasising the their commitment to keeping a leaner administration to cut costs.
“Let the records be set straight that any claim that President Mahama has appointed 100 ministers and is hiding some in the presidency is blatantly false,” he stated.
The number of Ministers in the administration, according to the Minister, stands at 56, which is four less than the projected 60 the President said he was going to work with.
The Abura Asebu Kwamankese Member of Parliament also detailed the presidential staffers and political appointees at the presidency. Per his facts, there are only 30 presidential staffers or aides in the current administration compared to the 336 who served under the erstwhile New Patriotic Party administration in 2022.
“Everybody appointed as a presidential staffer has been publicly named. Currently, there are 27 presidential staffers and three additional aides assigned to specific interventions,” he said.
“This is in sharp contrast to the NPP’s administration, where in 2017, they had 27 staffers and 256 political appointees, which later increased to 336 by 2022.”
He underscored the benefit of the reduction in number of ministers by the government, stressing on the millions that would be saved by the state for reducing the number of ministers from 126 which was used by the NPP administration to 60.
He says the money that would have been used to purchase vehicles for these ministers, together with other expenses, will all be saved.
He admonished the public not to pay attention to the propaganda by the NPP suggesting that the NDC government is bloated, highlighting the current administration’s quest to work with a lean government to reduce waste.
