Martin Luther Kpebu, a private legal practitioner, has said Ghanaians are not going to give the next president a space to breath if things do not go well from January 2025.
He says Ghana is currently suffering under poor economic conditions because they refused to criticise President Akufo-Addo early. According to him, if Ghanaians have stood up in the early days of this administration, things wouldn’t have been this messier.
Lawyer Kpebu says Ghanaians have now become more assertive and would not give any president the honeymoon to enjoy and implement bad policies that would affect their lives in future.
Speaking on the deferring of the injunction application on the Anti-LGBTQ+ bill by the Supreme Court, he asked Ghanaians not to keep quiet on matters that affect their lives and appears not to be in line with the norm, whilst cautioning against comments that would render pending matters in the court useless.
He says the voices of the masses is what shapes the indices that builds a stronger democracy, and in as much as people should be careful not to be contemptuous of the courts, they should also not keep quiet when things are not going the way they should be.
Following what he describes as the “too much honeymoon” for President Akufo-Addo, he assured the next administration that Ghanaians are not going to give them a field day.
“You think in January we are going to do the same, no, now we are wiser and more matured so from Day one, there will be no honeymoon. Your first day in office, if anything goes wrong, we will come baying for your blood,” he noted.
Mr. Kpebu continued that the constant criticism of the ills of government and how they shape the democracy could lead to presidents resigning in future since the constitution makes it clear that elections could be organised few months after a president and vice resign.
“And don’t be surprised, in the not too distance future, you’ll see a president resign because we’ve made it clear that in Article 60(13), when the president and vice resign, we will have elections quickly so now we’ve educated ourselves that our constitution provides for early elections,” he stated.
Article 60(13) reads: “Where the Speaker of Parliament assumes the office of President as a result of the death, resignation or removal from office of the President and the Vice-President, there shall be a presidential election within three months after his assumption of office.”
