The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has indicated that transparency is a principle its Executive Council does not take lightly.
It insists that the Association is very much committed to this demand.
According to the nation’s football-governing body, budgets of all national, as a result of this demand, are handled by the Sports Ministry.
This comes in reaction to an instruction given by President John Dramani Mahama to the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, for the GFA to be accountable to the public regarding the budget of national teams.
“I’ve instructed my office and the Minister of Sports and Recreation to hold the Ghana Football Association accountable to the people of Ghana as we prepare for these games, especially regarding the budget of the FA,” President Mahama stated on Thursday, February 27, when he delivered the State of the Nation address.
“There will be no secrecy in how much the government spends on the national teams. The budgets presented by the FA and other sports associations must be known by the public.”
But in a statement to respond to this, the GFA says it has always abided by this instruction.
“Indeed, as part of our commitment to transparency, the GFA has always provided the Ministry responsible for Sports with the first draft budget for the national teams,” it said on Friday, February 28.
“Beyond this, everything to do with the budgeting and expenditure related to the Black Stars sits with the Ministry.
“For emphasis, payments made in relation to the Black Stars are exclusively handled by the Ministry.”
The Association said it is energized by “the President’s passion and look forward to working with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation to actualize the dreams and aspirations of all Ghanaians”.
