The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has noted that Ghana’s long lasting peace has been consolidated by the religious tolerance existing amongst the citizenry.
The acceptance of each other’s faith without discrimination, he says, is what has accorded the nation the feat as one of the most peaceful countries on the continent and the most peaceful in West Africa.
At a meeting with the clergy in the Savanna Region as part of his nationwide campaign tour Wednesday May 15, 2024, the flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) recounted his days as a Member of the Methodist Boys’ Brigade and now serving as a national patron to the group despite being a Muslim.
He reemphasised how blessed Ghana is, for people of diverse religions to have co-existed peacefully amongst themselves over the years.
Describing the special nature of the relationship and the peace that comes with it, the Vice President admonished the citizenry not to take the atmosphere for granted.
“I was a strong member of the Methodist Boys’ Brigade in Sakasaka. And then today, I am Vice President and I’m also a patron of the Methodist Boy’s Brigade in Ghana. So we are a very blessed country.
“Our country Ghana, I believe, is very blessed and we are blessed likely because of the religious tolerance that we have amongst the religions in Ghana. It’s very special. Most of the time, we take it for granted but in fact, that type of tolerance and acceptance of each other is unique to us. It is for me, the heart of the peace that we enjoy in Ghana. Ghana is the most peaceful country in West Africa and one of the most peaceful countries in Africa,” he indicated.
He had promised during his previous engagements with the clergy in other regions to establish a stronger bond between the church and the state to enhance development.
